How does hypnosis work?

An evidence-based theraputic tool.

A hypnotic state is a naturally occurring state where the conscious, more logical part of your mind becomes relaxed and distracted. We all enter into a form of hypnotic trance on a daily basis, often when we are doing something that has become second nature to us like driving on a familiar route, brushing teeth or daydreaming. When we are in a hypnotic state, our unconscious mind becomes more open and receptive.

Hypnosis is a powerful way of altering sensation, perception and behaviour and is widely used by psychologists and hypnotherapists in their treatment methods. It has been an active area of investigation and research for over 100 years within distinguished university psychological and medical laboratories. In more recent times, it has found synergy with neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to be rewired and form new pathways.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; a hypnotherapist merely acts as a coach guiding you into a state of trance, where your mind and body relax. In a hypnotic state you hear everything and know where you are, so you're able to move and adjust at any time, and, if you need to, you can open your eyes.

The hypnotic state (aka trance) you enter doesn't achieve anything by itself. This is where hypnotherapy services differ from stage hypnosis. Hypnosis simply allows the therapy to take place, which can consist of crafted language forming hypnotic suggestions. The words chosen might include analogies, metaphors and guided imagery to shift your underlying mindset.

Hypnotherapists are trained in a learned skill, but we are not magicians – so if you are determined not to be hypnotised or don’t want to be, then we cannot override your free will. During a session, if you don’t like a suggestion you hear, you won’t take it on board. In short, hypnosis gives you more control over your subconscious mind and the hypnotherapist's role is to help you navigate it.

MYTH # 1

Hypnosis is a mind control

Before trying hypnotherapy for myself and later becoming a certified hypnotherapist, I used to worry about this too. In reality, you cannot be made to do anything against your will. During hypnotherapy, you remain fully aware and in control of all your senses at all times.

MYTH # 2

Not everyone can be hypnotised

Yes, everyone can. In fact we all experience trance multiple times daily. It often comes down to your motivation, willingness and rapport with your hypnotherapist. While I can guide you into a hypnotic state, the power lies with you. Why not take 'Can I be hypnotised Quiz' to learn more?

MYTH # 3

What if I get stuck in a trance?

This is a common myth and is not true. Noone can ever be “stuck” in hypnosis. The maximum that could possibly be experienced is that you drift into a natural sleep and wake up soon afterwards feeling refreshed.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy: what is the difference?

Although hypnosis and hypnotherapy services are used interchangeably, the two terms are not the same. Hypnosis is a state of mind - a combination of deep relaxation and focused concentration, as described above. And clinical hypnotherapy is a therapy that combines hypnosis with psychological treatment. Hypnotherapy services are becoming more popular these days in sports and business communities. The reason for its success is that hypnotherapy directs your subconscious mind to work in cooperation with your conscious intentions.

Hypnotherapists use 4 different hypnotic states or levels of trance: light, medium, deep and waking.

LIGHT TRANCE

Most people achieve light trance very easily.

At this level, your body is deeply relaxed, yet you are fully alert and more acutely aware of the sounds around you. As long as you are truly wanting to heal, your mind will be open to receiving hypnotic suggestions, and this will lead to change.

MEDIUM TRANCE

At this level, your body is even more relaxed. You are aware of external sounds but are becoming more focused on internal thoughts & feelings. This allows your imagination to take a part in the process. When you come out of a medium trance, you might not remember the session clearly or have a sense of how much time has passed.

DEEP TRANCE

This is also called the somnambulist level because it is like the trance experienced by a sleep walker. You can hear but you are so focused on your internal reality, that you don't respond to anything external. Only 1 in 10 of us naturally enters prolonged deep trance without guidance from a skilled practitioner.

WALKING TRANCE

It is possible to use hypnotic suggestion during communication in a waking state, and it can be very powerful. This is because the power of hypnosis isn't in trance - it's in bypassing the critical, thinking mind to reach the subconscious. A skilled practitioner can do this through language alone.

Is hypnotherapy effective?

According to the American Psychological Association, hypnotherapy has a 93% success rate after only 6 sessions, while cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychotherapy require well over 20 sessions to reach 70%.

Clinical hypnosis is a gentle and effective approach to get you the results that you want. The reason for its success is that hypnotherapy directs your subconscious mind to work in cooperation with your conscious focus and efforts.

Hypnosis helps you to tap into your subconscious, heal the root cause of your symptoms, and etch real changes deep in your mind, giving you the freedom to move towards your goal.

Together we can gently reframe negative thoughts, change unhelpful behaviour patterns, gain clarity and create the mindset that empowers you on your journey to happiness.

Trusted online hypnotherapy services

It's time to harness the power of your mind and transform your life.

I specialise in providing online hypnotherapy and coaching services from New Zealand via Zoom.

Experiencing hypnotherapy via Zoom or Skype used to be seen as highly unusual. Some recognised this method as progressive, while others regarded it with suspicion. Today it's different. Since COVID-19 changed the way we interact, Zoom has become a household name and online therapy is thriving.

The great advantage of online hypnotherapy is that it can be accessed from virtually anywhere - a fantastic innovation, especially for those in remote locations or living with a disability. But wherever you live, and whatever your situation, online hypnotherapy brings you some unique benefits.

Whether you choose face-to-face or online hypnotherapy sessions comes down to personal preference. The truth is that both are equally effective.

Contrary to what you might think, hypnosis doesn't require the therapist to be in the room with you. Online hypnotherapy sessions follow exactly the same format and structure as face-to-face sessions, the main difference being that you experience them in the comfort of your own home.

Does online hypnosis work?

Absolutely! Hypnosis is a natural state that you can achieve without being in the same room as me. As long as you can see and hear me, you will experience exactly the same benefits as seeing me in person.

Remember hypnotherapy is plagued by many myths. For example, sometimes hypnotherapists are seen as having special, magical, powers. The truth is, the hypnotherapist isn't the one who performs the magic – it's you! You are in charge, and you are the one creating real change.

In some cases, online hypnotherapy was found to be even more effective!

Being at home in a familiar, comfortable environment often induces a deeper hypnotic state, which can make online hypnotherapy sessions even more powerful.

The only potential obstacle to online hypnotherapy is when there are specific hypnosis techniques or particular problems that a therapist prefers to deal with face to face. The best hypnotherapists will always be willing to talk first with you to decide which is the ideal way for you to experience hypnotherapy – face-to-face, online, or a combination of the two.

What are the benefits of Zoom therapy sessions?

There are multiple advantages to online hypnotherapy sessions.

NO NEED TO TRAVEL

Now you can relax at home and simply click a Zoom link to join the session without the worry of travel, parking, delays or crowded public transport. It also works well for those who are travelling but want to keep up with their hypnotherapy sessions.

COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME

Being in a familiar environment helps you relax and create the atmosphere you want, be it your favourite chair, blanket or oil diffusers. You can truly let go and dive deeper into your subconscious.

SAVES YOU TIME AND MONEY

Time is our most precious commodity. Finally, you don’t have to worry about having to spend time on the road or figuring out how to get home or to the office on time after the session. You avoid paying for tolls, parking or public transport.

MORE HYPNOTHERAPISTS TO CHOOSE FROM

With online hypnotherapy, you are not restricted to working with a hypnotherapist in your local area. You can find one in another town, country or continent! This is especially important if you are looking for the best hypnotherapist for you. I’ve run online hypnotherapy sessions out of New Zealand for people in the United States, Europe and Western Australia, as well as New Zealanders with busy schedules or kids who prefer not to travel.

MORE FLEXIBLE APPOINTMENT TIMES

Having access to online hypnotherapy services can be very useful if you would like to see a hypnotherapist outside normal working hours. I can often deliver online hypnotherapy sessions as early as 8am or as late as 7pm, and on weekends.

TOTALLY COVID SAFE

With an online session, you can sneeze, cough or blow your nose without being concerned about others. You also eliminate contact with other people in the clinic or when travelling, and you don’t need to wear a face mask.

How do I attend a virtual hypnotherapy session?

As soon as you book a session online with me, you automatically receive a unique Zoom link via email, confirming the date and time you have booked. This link is safe and secure, and only you and I have access to it.

Just before the start of the session, you click the link and follow the instructions. You’ll be taken to a virtual waiting room, and I’ll let you in at the agreed time. We will then be able to see and hear each other and work together in the same way as a face-to-face session.

The Zoom 'waiting room' feature prevents other people from accidentally or intentionally joining your session. I also use a unique password and link each time to make sure your sessions are secure and confidential.

You don't need to worry about time differences either. My hypnotherapy services are available worldwide. During your booking, when you select the time and date for your session, it will automatically adjust to your time zone.
